Chimney cleaning: what to expect

During your chimney cleaning, your Swept Away Chimney professional will:

  • Inspect accessible portions of your chimney’s interior and exterior
  • Inspect factory-built units for cracks
  • Sweep your chimney with special custom-designed brushes
  • Check your chimney liner for cracks, gaps, and missing joints
  • Scrub your chimney’s smoke chamber, smoke shelf, and damper with hand tools
  • Sweep the firebox and clear any ash
  • Remove and brush the grate
  • Check for any fire safety hazards

The National Fire Protection Association recommends “chimneys be inspected at least once a year.” It has been our experience that under normal burning conditions it may take about one cord of wood burned in a fireplace to produce enough creosote build-up to warrant a chimney cleaning. This is only a rule of thumb and under certain burning conditions the need for sweeping could be much sooner. When in doubt, call Swept Away Chimney for a professional chimney inspection to determine if a chimney cleaning is necessary.

Our equipment is specifically designed for the type of chimney we are cleaning whether it is a large masonry fireplace, a furnace flue, or a metal factory-built chimney system. All brush-able creosote and soot is removed without damage to the fireplace or chimney. This includes the elbows in factory-built chimneys or connector pipes, which can become separated by using improperly sized or inappropriate brushes or rods. The work is done both from the outside and inside the home using proven methods to assure that no soot or creosote escapes into the room. Drop cloths, rug runners, a high-speed vacuum, tarps over the fireplace, and shoe covers guarantee a mess-free chimney cleaning! All soot and creosote dislodged during the cleaning process will be removed from the smoke shelf and firebox. Our professional will also examine the fireplace and chimney and provide you with information regarding any concerns discovered during the cleaning process.

Dirty chimney

The firebox to chimney shows creosote build-up. This chimney was cleaned 18 months prior to this photo. This is a Level II fire hazard; the danger of a chimney fire is significant with the 2-inch build-up of creosote. The safe build-up of creosote is 1/8 of an inch.

After chimney cleaning, all creosote is removed and the damper is repaired.
